Your Budget isn't a diet.....it's a Sat Nav.

"Beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink a great ship." – Benjamin Franklin
Say the word "budget" to most people and you can watch their shoulders tense. It sounds like restriction: no more takeaways, no more treats, a life of beige.
I get it. When I moved to Switzerland and it all went wrong, I spent twelve months juggling two homes with no income. I'd love to tell you I had a tidy spreadsheet guiding me through it. I didn't. I found out where my money was going the hard way, by watching the savings account empty.
What I learned is that a budget isn't a diet. It's a sat nav. It can't get you anywhere until it knows two things: where you are now, and where you want to go.
Track before you trim
Before you cut anything, look at the last three months of bank statements. Sort every outgoing into three buckets: essentials (roof, food, bills), lifestyle (the stuff that makes life enjoyable), and future you (savings, pensions, paying down debt). Most people are surprised by at least one number. That surprise is where the work starts.
Pay future you first
Don't save what's left at the end of the month. There's never anything left at the end of the month. Set up a standing order for payday, even a small one, so future you gets paid before the supermarket does.
Give every pound a job, including fun
A budget with no room for enjoyment fails for the same reason crash diets do. You white-knuckle it for three weeks and then face-plant into the Oreo cheesecake. Build in fun money deliberately and guilt-free. Rules like 50/30/20 (needs, wants, savings) are a decent starting point, but your numbers should fit your life, not a formula.
Watch the "surprise" bills
Car insurance, the MOT, Christmas and birthdays aren't surprises. They just don't happen monthly. Add them up for the year, divide by twelve, and put that aside each month. It takes a lot of the stress out of the year.
ACTION POINT – Download your last three months of statements this week and sort them into the three buckets (essential, lifestyle and future). Don't judge, just look. What surprised you?
